He was the second child and elder son of John and Rachael (nee Townsend) Allitt. Of his father (above) absolutely nothing is known – and little more of his mother except that she died on the 25^th April 1871 and is buried in grave No. 30 Church of England Section of the South Portland Cemetery Australia. It has not been possible to ascertain how or when she came to Australia.
